Commercial Mops

Choosing a mop for a workplace comes down to three things: the floor type, the size of the area, and whether you are removing dust or washing. NXP stocks 49 mops, mop heads, pads and handles from Oates, Greenspeed, Raven, Glomesh, Filta and Taskisum, across flat, fringe, microfibre and squeeze mop systems.

The five mop types, and what each is for

Flat mops use a rectangular pad on a swivel frame. They hold less water than a traditional mop, so floors dry faster and there is less slip risk, and they cover open floor far more quickly. They are the standard in healthcare, food handling, offices and education, and they suit pre-soaked pad systems where a fresh pad goes on for each room. The Greenspeed 40cm frame and the Oates Ultra flat mop are the systems stocked here.

Fringe mops — the traditional string or looped-end head — hold a lot of water and get into corners, skirtings and uneven surfaces. Still the right tool for rough concrete, workshop floors, back-of-house areas and anywhere a flat pad will not sit properly. The Greenspeed scrub and twist fringe mops at 45cm cover this.

Squeeze mops are sponge mops with a lever wringer, so the head is squeezed out without being touched. Good for small areas, kitchens and spills, and popular where staff clean their own space. The Raven Mop-A-Matic system here uses 2-pin and 4-pin refills — check which fitting your handle takes before ordering refills, because the two are not interchangeable.

Microfibre mops are a material rather than a shape, and the distinction is worth understanding. Microfibre lifts far more dust and bacteria than cotton, largely mechanically rather than chemically, so it cleans effectively with less detergent and less water. It is the standard specification for healthcare and food-handling environments, and it is stocked here as flat pads, mop heads and disposable pads.

Dust control mops are dry mops — wide modacrylic heads, 61cm and 91cm here, for sweeping large hard floors before any wet cleaning. Faster and far less dust-raising than a broom across an open area such as a hall, gym or warehouse.

Wet or dry: the sequence matters

The order matters more than the equipment. Dust mop first, then wet mop. Wet mopping over loose dust and grit makes mud, spreads it, and grinds the grit into the floor finish. On any large hard floor, a dust control pass before washing halves the work and gives a visibly better result.

Colour coding, and why it is not decoration

Colour-coded mop heads exist to stop cross-contamination. The convention used across the New Zealand cleaning industry is a four-colour system:

  • Red — toilets and washroom floors
  • Yellow — washroom surfaces and basins
  • Blue — general areas, offices and corridors
  • Green — food preparation and kitchens

If you are cleaning a site with a kitchen or a food handling area, this is not optional in practice. It is what an auditor or a HACCP-based food control plan expects to see, and it is the simplest control against carrying contamination from a toilet floor into a kitchen. Buy matching coloured buckets alongside the heads, or the system breaks down at the bucket.

Sizing and coverage

Head width determines speed. A 40cm flat mop or a 61cm dust mop suits offices, corridors and normal rooms. Step up to a 91cm dust control mop for halls, gyms, warehouses and large open floors — the extra width genuinely reduces the number of passes.

Head weight is commonly around 400g in this range. Heavier heads hold more water and cover more ground per dip, but they are harder work across a long shift.

Handle length should bring the top of the handle to roughly chin height, so the user is not stooping. A 1.4m to 1.5m handle suits most adults. Check the fitting between handle and head before ordering, and see the full handles range if you are replacing separately.

Replacement heads and pads

Mop heads are consumables, and this is where the running cost is controlled. A worn head smears rather than cleans, and holding spare heads is far cheaper than buying complete mops. There are two approaches:

Launderable heads — microfibre and textile heads that are washed and reused. Lower cost per use and the more sustainable option, provided there is a laundry process that actually happens.

Disposable pads — such as the Taskisum 25-pack here. Higher cost per use, but no laundering, no cross-contamination risk between rooms, and the right call for healthcare, isolation areas and sites without laundry facilities.

Ordering the rest of the system

A mop is one part of a floor routine. Brooms and dustpans handle debris a dust mop will not lift, and wet floor signs are what keep a freshly mopped corridor from becoming a hazard. NXP has no minimum order quantity and orders placed by 3pm dispatch the same day from the nearest branch, so heads, buckets, signs and chemicals can go on one order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a flat mop and a traditional fringe mop?

A flat mop uses a rectangular pad on a swivel frame: it holds less water, so floors dry faster, and it covers open floor much more quickly. A fringe mop holds more water and reaches into corners and uneven surfaces, which makes it better for rough concrete and back-of-house areas.

Is a microfibre mop better than a cotton one?

For most commercial cleaning, yes. Microfibre lifts significantly more dust and bacteria, works with less water and less detergent, and dries faster. It is the standard specification in healthcare and food handling. Cotton and textile heads still suit heavy water pick-up and rough surfaces.

What do the mop colours mean?

They prevent cross-contamination between areas. The common convention is red for toilets and washroom floors, yellow for washroom surfaces, blue for general areas and green for food preparation. Any site with a kitchen or food handling area should be running a colour-coded system, with buckets and cloths matched to the mops.

How often should a mop head be replaced?

Replace it when it stops cleaning rather than on a fixed schedule: a head that smears, sheds fibres or no longer holds water is costing you time on every pass. Launderable microfibre typically survives a few hundred washes; textile heads considerably fewer.

Will any mop head fit any handle?

No. Squeeze mop refills in particular are fitting-specific — the Raven Mop-A-Matic system uses 2-pin and 4-pin refills that are not interchangeable. Check the fitting on your existing handle or frame before ordering replacements.

Do I need a separate dust mop, or can I just wet mop?

On a small floor you can go straight to wet mopping. On anything large or gritty, dust mopping first is faster overall and gives a better finish, because wet mopping over loose grit spreads mud and grinds the grit into the floor surface.
